The APRM Process in Mali : A critical evaluation

When the APRM process started in Mali in June 2007 the country had established a reputation for vigorous debates on governance, in particular at the National Human Rights Day organized each year. Yet, important issues such as the governance crisis resulting from the conflict in the North were shut out of the self-assessment process. Mali is also known for its vibrant civil society, yet civil society’s poor participation in the APRM is one of the weaknesses of the process. While noting these and other weaknesses, this report also highlights a number of strengths of the APRM in Mali.

The launch of the Mali APRM assessment was attended by 106 participants, including the minister of African Integration and national focal point, the chair and members of the NGC, the president of the chamber of commerce, a woman M ember of the Parliament, and representatives of CSOs. The report was launched on May 12, 2011 from 9:30 to 11:45 and was covered by ORTM (the national broadcaster) with a segment in the evening news.
