Benin
Official site of the Benin government. UNDP in Benin has supported the government in the implementation of the APRM and other aspects of good governance.

DR Congo
Official website of the Presidency. UNDP also has a website for DRC, including description of its priority programme on governance.

Ghana
The government of Ghana's official website, with news updates, information and library resources from Parliament and the judicial service.

Kenya
Official website of the government of Kenya. The NEPAD Kenya Secretariat maintains a separate site with information on the implementation of NEPAD and the APRM in Kenya.

Malawi
The government of Malawi's official website with information on the different Ministries, and institutions of government, including the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs .

Mozambique
The government of Mozambique's official website, with government's national plans, information on the institutions, and news updates. The APRM in Mozambique has its own website.

Senegal

South Africa
The South African government's website. The Dept of Foreign Affairs has a useful database with key documents of the African Union and other regional organisations. The South African peer review mechanism secretariat also has a website with useful documents.

African Intergovernmental Organisations

African Development Bank
The African Development Bank Group is a multinational development bank, consisting of three institutions; the African Development Bank (ADB), the African Development Fund (ADF), and the Nigeria Trust Fund (NTF). The Group’s mission is to help reduce poverty, improve living conditions for Africans and mobilize resources for Africa’s economic and social development. The Group has a focus on economic and financial governance, including the preparation of governance profiles for individual African states.

African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development
The African Training and Research Centre in Administration for Development (CAFRAD) is a Pan African intergovernmental organization, established in 1964 by African governments, with the support of UNESCO; making it the first uniquely Pan-African training and research center in the continent for the improvement of public administration and governance systems in Africa. Its headquarters is located in Tangier (Morocco). Membership is open to all African countries: at present, CAFRAD has a membership of 36 States.

NEPAD

Arab Maghreb Union (AMU)
The Association of North African states.

Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)
COMESA has 20 members and promotes regional economic integration through trade and investment.

East African Community (EAC)
The EAC is the regional intergovernmental organisation of the Republics of Kenya, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS)
ECCAS has 11 members, and aims to achieve collective autonomy, raise the standard of living of its populations and maintain economic stability through cooperation.

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
ECOWAS is the West African regional trade integration and development organisation.

Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)
IGAD in Eastern Africa has a mandate to coordinate the efforts of member states in the priority areas of economic cooperation, political and humanitarian affairs, food security and environment protection.

Southern African Development Community (SADC)
SADC has 13 members, with its headquarters in Gabarone, Botswana. The status of SADC treaty ratifications is here.

International Intergovernmental Organisations

International IDEA
International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), an intergovernmental organization with member states from all continents, has a mandate to support sustainable democracy worldwide. IDEA operates as an interface between those who analyse and monitor trends in democracy and those who engage directly in political reform or act in support of democracy at home and abroad. AfriMAP has drawn on IDEA's Democracy Assessment Framework in its own work.

Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
The OHCHR website includes a comprehensive database of international law and also texts adopted for the promotion of democracy (available in PDF format here).

UN Economic Commission for Africa
The UNECA website includes information on programs, documentation from conferences and downloads of recent publications. Their Information Resources on Good Governance in Africa database contains a wide range of useful links. UNECA also has a programme on the APRM, with a useful webpage of resources.

UNDP Oslo Governance Centre
UNDP Oslo Governance Centre is UNDP's global facility on democratic governance. The Centre has a special focus and competency in the area of access to justice, human rights, civil society, and governance and conflict prevention. The Governance Assessment Portal established by the UNDP Governance Centre is designed to provide easy access to a variety of sources of information for planning and implementing country-led governance assessments.

United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)
The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) is an autonomous UN agency engaging in multidisciplinary research on the social dimensions of contemporary problems affecting development. Through its research, UNRISD stimulates dialogue and contributes to policy debates on key issues of social development within and outside the United Nations system.

World Bank Institute
The World Bank Institute is the capacity development arm of the World Bank, and the website includes a large library of resources on development challenges.

Africa Focus features high-quality analysis and progressive advocacy on African issues, with particular attention to priority areas affecting the entire continent.

AfricaNews
AfricaNews is a project of Africa Interactive, an online media company running an international, interactive and multimedia platform, with a particular focus on Africa. English and Dutch only.

Afrique en ligne

Afrol News
Afrol News is an independent news agency, established in 2000 in Oslo. Afrol News covers the African continent in English, Spanish and in Portuguese.

AllAfrica.com is a continent-wide electronic provider of African news, with over 800 stories daily in English and French.

Integrated Regional Information Networks
The Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN), part of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), provides reports on a wide array of political, economic and social issues affecting humanitarian efforts.

Pan African News Agency
The Pan African News Agency is an international news and information service covering the African continent, and based in Dakar. Articles in English, French, Portuguese and Arabic.

Politique Africaine
Politique Africaine is a review offering in-depth analysis of political issues in Africa, largely by African writers (available in French only).

Amnesty International
Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. AI's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

ANSA-Africa
ANSA-Africa is a network jointly created by the World Bank and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa, to (1) Develop cross-country collaboration on social accountability and demand-side governance initiatives; (2) Provide technical assistance to different countries so the quality of social accountability initiatives is greatly enhanced; (3) Deliver training programs on specific tools and techniques; and (4) Share country experiences and lessons from social accountability and demand-side governance initiatives regionally and globally.

The Centre for Human Rights of the Faculty of Law of the University of Pretoria, is one of the most active human rights institutions on the African continent. The primary focus area of the Centre is human rights law in Africa.

Droit-Afrique.com is a site dedicated to the laws of francophone Africa, principally those regulating financial and tax matters.

Eldis
Eldis is one of a family of knowledge services from the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, UK. It consists of a database of more than 25,000 documents sharing the best in development, policy, practice and research.

Global Witness
Global Witness campaigns to achieve real change by challenging established thinking on seemingly intractable global issues. They work to highlight the link between the exploitation of natural resources and human rights abuses, particularly where resources such as timber, diamonds and oil are used to fund and perpetuate conflict and corruption.

IFEX monitors attacks on journalists and others who report on corruption, as well as initiatives to improve transparency, access to information and open government.

Institute for Security Studies
Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is a leading African human security research institution, working towards a stable and peaceful Africa characterised by sustained development, human rights, the rule of law, democracy and collaborative security. Includes a comprehensive database of key documentation from regional African organisations.

International Budget Project
The International Budget Project was formed in 1997 to nurture the growth of civil society capacity to analyze and influence government budget processes, institutions and outcomes. The overarching aim of the project is to make budget systems more responsive to the needs of society and, accordingly, to make these systems more transparent and accountable to the public.

International Center for Transitional Justice
The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) assists countries pursuing accountability for past mass atrocity or human rights abuse. It provides comparative information, legal and policy analysis, documentation, and strategic research to justice and truth-seeking institutions, nongovernmental organizations, governments and others.

International Council on Human Rights Policy
The International Council on Human Rights Policy conducts applied policy research on issues that face organisations working in the field of human rights.

International Crisis Group

Law of Africa Collection
The Law of Africa Collection (Oliver R Tambo Law Library, University of Pretoria) brings together the law of all African countries in one place.

Legalbrief Africa
Legalbrief Africa is a weekly electronic newsletter summarising 20 to 30 legal news items relevant to Africa distilled from leading African and international publications.

Lexana
Lexana offers an on-line library of African law in French, with both national and international legal texts.

Open Society Foundations
The Open Society Foundations (OSF), of which AfriMAP is a project, is a private operating and grantmaking foundation that aims to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights, and economic, legal, and social reform. Other initiatives include Open Society Justice Initiative, with which AfriMAP collaborates on citizenship issues in particular.

Overseas Development Institute
The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is a UK based independent think-tank on international development and humanitarian issues.

Pambazuka
Pambazuka News offers a comprehensive weekly round-up of news on human rights, conflict, health, environment, social welfare, development, the internet, literature and arts in Africa. Pambazuka also hosts the AU Monitor, a useful source of information about civil society activism around the AU.

Public Service Accountability Monitor
The Public Service Accountability Monitor (PSAM) is an independent monitoring and research institute dedicated to strengthening democracy in South Africa. PSAM is based at Rhodes University in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, and gathers information on the management of public resources and the handling of misconduct and corruption cases by government departments.

South African Institute of International Affairs
The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) promotes public debate and independent policy analysis on international affairs and issues affecting Africa, through conferences, reports and its publications. SAIIA's programme on Governance and the APRM has many useful background documents on the APRM process, including information on the African Peer Review Monitoring Project, a collaboration with AfriMAP.

Southern African Regional Poverty Network
Southern African Regional Poverty Network (SARPN) contributes to the sustainable reduction of poverty through effective pro-poor policy, strategy and practice in the SADC region. Its purpose is to deepen and widen debates on policy, strategy, practice and decision-making processes that impact on poverty in the region.

Transparency International
Transparency International (TI) is devoted to combating corruption. Through its International Secretariat and more than 85 independent national chapters around the world, it works at both the national and international level to curb both the supply and demand of corruption.
