Uneasy Calm Returns to Guinean Capital
24 September 2012, WADR

Calm is returning Monday to Conakry, the Guinean capital, after President Alpha Condè called for an end to violence following two days of clashes between supporters of his party and the main opposition Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG).

At least one member of the opposition UFDG led by Cellou Dalein Diallo was reportedly killed by law enforcement officers in a suburb known as a stronghold of the UFDG, while some two dozen others wounded during the weekend confrontations.

Several shops and vehicles were damaged in the vicinity of the Madina market, reputed to be the largest commercial center in Guinea.

WADR correspondent in Conakry said government offices, banks and other activities resumed normally in the Kaloum area of central Conakry, but stores and other businesses were closed in the Madina market area, while most of the suburbs were experiencing an uneasy calm.

He said police and gendarmerie were posted at major intersections of the city in an apparent attempt to deter further confrontation.

Opposition leader Diallo, speaking during a visit Saturday by Guinean Prime Minister Mohamed Said Fofana to express condolences over the death of the UFDG partisan on, noted that it was the eleventh member of his party to be killed by state security forces since Alpha Condè came to power.

Diallo called on President Condè to advise his supporters to stop their provocation of the opposition and urged the President to end the culture of impunity over killings if peace is to prevail in Guinea.

Analysts have expressed concern about the risk of these clashes deteriorating into ethnic violence between the Malinkè tribesmen of President Condè and the Peul (Fula) kinsmen of main opposition leader Diallo.
